When to Hit Each Village

Crowd peak hours observed in August 2025 ran from 10:30 to 16:00. The source is clear: cruise ship excursions from La Spezia and Livorno plus tour buses. You avoid those hours by design. The villages reward different times of day.

• Manarola. The smallest harbour. Come for sunset. The crowds gather on the point, but you can find space on the rocks west of the main viewpoint if you arrive by 18:00.
• Riomaggiore. Sleepy in the morning. Good for a late linger after dinner. The Via dell'Amore segment to Manarola reopened in July 2024 with a timed-entry ticket. The One Day Plan

Take the 06:30 train from La Spezia to the beach town. Walk the coastal trail to Vernazza by 08:30. Explore Vernazza until 09:45, then train to Corniglia. Climb the steps, walk the high lanes, have lunch. Train to Manarola by 15:00. Sit on the rocks. Train to Riomaggiore for a walk and dinner. Last train back to La Spezia at 23:33. That is a full day with no crush.

Where We Disagree on Sleeping

One of us thinks you should stay in a village. The evening emptiness is worth the premium. Vernazza at 20:00 with the day-trippers gone is a different place. The same person would sleep in Vernazza again. The other person thinks La Spezia is fine if the budget is tight. The last train solution works. The one real disagreement is the beach town. The planner calls it too resort-like. Too many umbrella rows, too much of a beach club vibe. The wanderer liked the flat streets, the easy beach access, and the fact that you can roll out of bed and onto the sand without a train. If you want to stay in a village and you prefer flat ground and a beach, the beach town is the better choice. If you want the postcard harbour and the tower, pay for Vernazza. If you want to save the money and see it all from a working city, La Spezia wins.

This plan suits the traveller who wants to see the five settlements without being part of the problem. It suits the person who would rather spend 70 euro on a room and 18 euro on a train card than 180 euro on a room that comes with a 10:00 noise curfew of tour groups. It suits you if you can handle a 15-minute train ride instead of a 15-second walk from your hotel door.

It does not suit you if you need to be in the centre of the action at all times. It does not suit you if you want to swim at Fegina beach at 09:00, walk back to your room in a towel, and have breakfast in your pyjamas. That is a Vernazza or beach-town stay. It does not suit you if the idea of checking a train timetable makes you anxious. The trains run every 15 to 30 minutes. Miss one, wait for the next. The system is simple and it works.

La Spezia is not a compromise. It is a decision to see the villages on your own terms, at your own pace, at half the price. The Vernazza crush will happen with or without you. This is how you watch it from the outside.
